The City of Torrance Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for a full-time Intern I to fill the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program with the Torrance Art Museum, Cultural Services Division. 

 

The Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program is intended for members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts. Internship candidates can be from any area of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts. 

 

The internship is for a total of 400 hours (40 hours per week), Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Hours may vary and Intern may be asked to work some evenings and weekends. The internship will take place during a consecutive 10-week period from June 14 – August 23, 2021, at a rate of $15.87 per hour. 

 

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES: Per the Getty Foundation, students must: 

  • Be of a group underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent;

  • Be currently enrolled undergraduates (bachelor's degree program, associate's degree program, or a vocational or technical program below the baccalaureate level). Students must have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June 2021. Due to the extraordinary circumstances of COVID-19, students who graduated after April 1, 2020 are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible).

  • Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (non-citizen authorized to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis; also known as a "green card" holder). 4/14/2021 Students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status valid through the internship period are also eligible.

 

DUTIES: Participation in day to day activities of the curatorial staff at the Torrance Art Museum. Develop a hypothetical exhibition covering all aspects of museum process. Assist with registrarial duties regarding Ultra! Exhibition (public art project). Provide curatorial support for 2021 SUR Biennial exhibition which focuses on artists from Mexico, Central and South America. Attend weekly TAM staff meetings (phone and potentially in-person). Attend weekly Zoom meetings with staff. Interface with the public, volunteers and other City employees. Attend one meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission. Assist with publicity, museum special events and openings. Other duties as assigned. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Microsoft Office. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Skill with social media. Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions. Learn and follow departmental policies and procedures. Be flexible with schedule and multi-task. Work as part of a team. Desirable: An interest in Contemporary Art and Art Museum careers.
